Simba Camp
Simba Camp is a basic but scenic campsite located on the Rongai Route of Mount Kilimanjaro at an altitude of about 2,600 meters. It is typically the first overnight stop for climbers approaching the mountain from the northern side, near the Kenyan border. The camp sits in a transition zone between farmland and montane forest, offering expansive views of the surrounding plains and, on clear days, the majestic slopes of Kilimanjaro. Facilities are simple, usually consisting of designated tent areas and basic toilets, making it a quiet and less crowded introduction to the climb.
Second Cave Camp
Second Cave Camp is a small and relatively quiet campsite on the Rongai Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, situated at an altitude of 3,450 meters. It is named after a nearby lava cave, though climbers rarely use the cave itself for shelter. The camp lies in a moorland zone with low vegetation, offering wide, open views across the Kenya plains and the mountain’s northern slopes. Often used as a lunch stop or a short acclimatization overnight point, Second Cave Camp provides a peaceful setting with fewer crowds compared to other routes on Kilimanjaro.
Kikelewa Camp
Kikelewa Camp is a scenic and strategically important campsite on the Rongai Route of Mount Kilimanjaro, located at 3,600 meters above sea level. Nestled in a sheltered valley surrounded by giant senecio plants and rugged hills, the camp marks a transition into the alpine desert zone. It is typically used as an overnight stop after Second Cave, helping climbers acclimatize as they gain altitude. The peaceful setting, cooler temperatures, and striking high-altitude vegetation make Kikelewa Camp a memorable stage on the ascent toward Mawenzi Tarn.
Mawenzi Turn Hut
Mawenzi Turn Hut is a high-altitude campsite situated at around 4,300 meters on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro along the Rongai Route. Nestled beneath the rugged peaks of Mawenzi, it marks a key turning point where some trekkers rest or begin their descent, while others use it for acclimatization before continuing higher. The area features a stark alpine desert landscape with minimal vegetation, offering dramatic views and a quiet, remote atmosphere that highlights the mountain’s raw beauty.
Kibo Hut
Kibo Hut is a high-altitude base camp located at about 4,700 meters on the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro. It serves as the main staging point for climbers preparing for the final summit push to Uhuru Peak, usually starting at midnight. The area is characterized by a barren alpine desert landscape with cold temperatures and thin air, offering basic shelter and a crucial resting place before the challenging ascent to the summit.
Horombo Hut
Horombo Hut sits at about 3,720 meters on the southeastern slope of Mount Kilimanjaro and serves as a key overnight and acclimatization stop on the Marangu Route. Unlike the basic shelters lower down, it’s a small cluster of A-frame wooden huts painted in earthy tones, surrounded by open moorland dotted with giant lobelias and groundsels. The air is noticeably thinner and cooler, and the landscape feels more alpine than forested, with wide views stretching across the mountain and, on clear days, far into the plains below.
